Decent VPS hosting

Before I start, I want you to know that I’m not going to make pimping out my host’s affiliate link a regular occurrence. But recently, my web host started up an affiliate program, and I have recommended them a lot in the past and people have asked if I had an affiliate link, just to thank me.

So. Here we go. :)

I use a host called FutureHosting. They resell space from SoftLayer. I have found them to be competent and fair minded. They have semi-managed VPS hosting, as well as dedicated, for reasonable prices. They are also running some fantastic specials. You can even choose to have Cpanel or Plesk if you like, or no webadmin and install one yourself. That comes as low as $20 a month. For most small WPMU setups, a mid-range one will do you nicely for quite a while.

I host two busy WPMU installs, plus a good ten other domains (inlcuding two more MU sites in dev) all on one VPS with just under a gig of memory. Remember, it’s the processing and memory limits you want to look for in a host – not just the hard drive space and bandwidth. Some shared hosts offer insane amount of bandwidth and space, but severely limit the processing power & MySQL connections available to your account.

If you’re worried about moving from shared to VPS, these guys will help you, and they will also let you learn as much as you want. That’s also a nice way of saying you can try and jump in the deep end, and they’ll fish you out if you need it. :)

The only thing I will note is their domain is a .biz and some spam filters block it. You really do need to get the emails they send. :)

I don’t get any payout unless someone sticks around with them for three months, so there’s my open transparency. :D That should be plenty enough time for anyone to get a WordPress MU install up & running to launch, as well as learn their way around a server.
